Did You Know? There’s a history behind the name “Jack Leg Cabin"

The portable buildings we know today developed as a practical answer to a simple problem — businesses and construction projects needed buildings that could be delivered, positioned, used and moved again when required.

Early portable units were particularly associated with the construction industry, where accommodation was needed quickly on changing sites.

The Jack Leg design helped solve one of the biggest practical problems: getting a large building on and off transport and positioning it on site.

The name comes from the jacking legs fitted to the building.

Historical UK patent records from the 1980s describe jack legs already being used with mobile offices and cabins. The legs could be used to raise and lower the cabin for loading and unloading, while also supporting the building when temporarily installed on site.

The adjustable legs also meant the building could be levelled on uneven ground — an important advantage when a portable building is being installed on different sites.

And the basic principle has stood the test of time.

Today, Jack Leg buildings can be used for much more than traditional construction-site accommodation — including commercial offices, welfare facilities, classrooms, meeting rooms, canteens, security buildings and additional workspace.
